For every $2.00 we spend on food, we spent another $1.00 on transportation costs. By growing food close to where it is consumed, we save transportation costs and conserve energy. Garden grown food is fresh, avoids preservations, offers greater variety and suffers less nutrient loss than supermarket produce. Small gardens are also two to four times as productive as farms per square foot. By growing our own food and sharing with our neighbors in need, we reduce the demand on the world's food supply and provide more nutritious food to the hungry in Phoenixville. By growing food organically, we replenish the soil and reduce the nations' dependence on petrochemicals, and provide untainted food for our neighbors.
