Saint John's United Church of Christ is in mission with our community and with the American Red Cross through regular participation in and promotion of the Phoenixville Area Community Blood Drives.

We do not have a date for the next Red Cross Blood drive in Phoenixville. You may want to contact the Phoenixville Hospital for their next blood drive in 2008. Thank you for your support to the community!

As we pray and give thanks for our blessings, let us remember those less fortunate than ourselves, the sick and injured of our community. Those who need blood receive it because people like you give of themselves and donate blood at American Red Cross blood drives.

Thankful for our good health, let us share that good healthy with others by giving blood . . . the gift of life!!

To schedule an appointment for this, or any blood drive, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE, and be sure to mention St. John's United Church of Christ!

You too can "HELP US HELP OTHERS" by becoming a blood donor. Who can donate? Anyone 17 years or older, weighing at least 110lbs. Though the Red Cross themselves can better answer your questions, some important facts are as follows:

·         Blood donors can give a pint as often as every two months.

·         It is not possible to contract the AIDS virus by donating blood. The needle is sterile and used only once and nurses wear gloves. The only blood test performed at the blood drive is to determine the donor's iron level, it is not a test for HIV.

·         You may, and you are encouraged to, eat before donating blood. It is recommended though that you not eat a meal that is too heavy.

·         Please allow about one to one and a half hours to complete the donation process, and don't forget to BRING I.D.

·         If possible, please try to refrain from drinking coffee for at least one hour before donating. Coffee has been known to elevate one's temperature enough to render you ineligible to donate.

·         It is recommended that you abstain from heavy exercise for at least 12 hours after you have donated blood.

·         It is also recommended that you drink at least four eight-ounce glasses of non-alcoholic beverages to replenish your fluid supply after your blood donation.

·         And most importantly - FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF!! This one act of kindness and generosity will go a long way in helping people in their time of need. Consider the following story:

One day my daughter, Suzanne, borrowed my car to go shopping. When she returned to the parking lot, she noticed a note had been placed under the right windshield wiper. She was puzzled when she read the message: "Thank You! You could have been the person who saved my baby's life."

Then Suzanne took into account the note's position. It was secured next to a sticker on the inside of the windshield that identified me as a four gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross.

Someone Will be Thankful!
